Accordion vs. Roll-Down vs. Storm Panels: Which Hurricane Protection Is Right for Your Miami Home?
Every Miami-Dade home needs rated protection over its windows and doors — that part isn’t up for debate. The real question is which kind. The three workhorses of South Florida storm protection are storm panels, accordion shutters, and roll-down shutters, and each one earns its place for a different type of homeowner.
We’ve manufactured and installed all three across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Kendall since 2005. Here’s how we explain the choice at kitchen tables every week.
The Quick Comparison
| Storm Panels | Accordion Shutters | Roll-Down Shutters | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost level | $ — most affordable | $$ — the middle path | $$$ — the premium option |
| Closing before a storm | Hours — panels must be carried out and mounted | Minutes — unfold and lock | Minutes or seconds — crank or motor |
| Storage | Needs garage/closet space off-season | None — always mounted | None — housed above the opening |
| Everyday security | Only when mounted | Good — lockable when closed | Excellent — a closed steel curtain |
| Curb appeal | Invisible off-season | Slim tracks beside openings | Discreet housing box above openings |
| Best for | Budget-first protection, rentals, rarely-used openings | Most homes — large openings, balconies, bay windows | Coastal homes, condos, storefronts, convenience seekers |
Storm Panels: Maximum Protection per Dollar
Storm panels are the most economical form of rated hurricane protection you can buy. Each corrugated panel overlaps the next for strength, and the headers and sills can be permanently mounted so the panels slide into place when a storm approaches — then stack away compactly the rest of the year.
The trade-off is labor. Somebody has to carry them out of the garage and mount every panel before each storm, and take them down after. If you’re comfortable with a few hours of work when a storm is coming — or you’re protecting openings you rarely use — panels deliver serious protection at the lowest cost. They also do double duty securing a home against break-ins while you’re away for the season.

Accordion Shutters: The Workhorse of Miami-Dade
Accordion shutters are permanently mounted beside each opening and fold closed like — well, an accordion. When a storm is named, you close and lock each one in minutes. No ladders, no storage, no lifting panels over your head.
They shine on the openings that are hardest to protect any other way: sliding glass doors, patios, balconies, and even the curved and bay windows of homes and condominiums. Built from high-impact, weather-resistant materials, they offer durable, lifetime protection — and they’ve proven to increase the market value of homes and businesses. For most Miami-Dade households, accordions are the sweet spot between price and convenience.
Roll-Down Shutters: Protection at the Push of a Button
Roll-down shutters live in a discreet housing above each opening and lower along side tracks — manually with a crank, or electrically at the push of a button. They’re the most convenient option by a mile, which is why they’re so popular with coastal properties and anyone who doesn’t want storm prep to be an event.
They also earn their keep the other 51 weeks of the year: a closed roll-down is one of the most effective break-in deterrents you can put on a home or storefront, and lowered against the summer sun they provide shade and energy savings. If you want your house to become a fortress in under a minute, this is the product.
So Which One Should You Get?
What 20 Years of Installs Taught Us
Tightest budget, don’t mind the work: storm panels on every opening. Honest, code-rated protection at the lowest cost.
Most homes: accordion shutters. Minutes to close, nothing to store, and they handle big sliders, balconies, and bay windows gracefully.
Coastal, condo, storefront, or convenience-first: roll-downs — with security and energy perks year-round.
The smart mix: many of our customers combine them — roll-downs or accordions on the main living areas and sliders, storm panels on the garage-side windows nobody opens. Same protection tier, optimized spend.
